This casserole is a comforting and hearty dish that combines tender potatoes, flavorful minced meat, and a creamy, cheesy topping for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

For the Layers:

  • 500g (1 lb) minced meat (beef, lamb, or a mix)
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup (250ml) milk or heavy cream
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or parmesan)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Minced Meat Layer
  2. Heat oil or butter in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until soft and translucent.
  4. Add the minced meat, and season with salt, black pepper, paprika, and cumin (if using).
  5. Cook until the meat is browned and all excess moisture has evaporated. Remove from heat.
  6. Assemble the Casserole
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Lightly grease a baking dish and arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer.
  9. Spread the cooked minced meat evenly over the potatoes.
  10. Arrange the remaining potato slices on top to create a second layer.
  11. Prepare the Sauce & Bake
  12. Whisk together eggs, milk (or heavy cream), and salt in a bowl.
  13. Pour the mixture evenly over the layered casserole, ensuring it seeps between the layers.
  14. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  15. Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheese on top, and return to the oven.
  16. Bake uncovered for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  17. Serve & Enjoy

Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
